We’re miles ahead of where we were when we shut school in mid-March and as a lab school, we are determined to keep experimenting and learning.
We’re eager to share our learning with you in this month’s newsletter.

May & June Flashback
A Warm Welcome to All on the First Day of the New Academic Year

It's been a challenging few months for all at Gateway, particularly our students, to adapt to a whole new way of learning. Our Founder, Indira Bodani shared a special message on the first day of virtual school to assure the Gateway Community of the unwavering Gateway spirit of love, hope and optimism.

Health Education During Virtual Learning

During lock down, many parents and teachers shared concern about the damage that excessive screen time can do to all of us. The Sensory-Motor department thus created a “Health Education - Virtual Learning Series”; a set of videos with strategies and tips that can help us ensure healthy virtual learning practices.

Social-Emotional meets Sensory-Motor in this Middle-School Homeroom
Teachers and therapists from a Middle-School homeroom have incorporated Social-Emotional and Sensory-Motor principles in classes to help students with body and emotional regulation in virtual classes.

They've also incorporated games like Pictionary in the homeroom to foster rapport building and help students learn how work in teams.

Who says we can't watch movies together anymore?

As part of their “Mass Media” class, NIOS 12th students are exploring the origins of mass media and examining the development of films over the ages. The class watched 'Harishchandrachi Factory' a Marathi film with English subtitles in a virtual meeting space. The movie was based on the making of the first film in India 'Raja Harischandra' by the pioneer himself. Teachers also paused the movie at intervals to help students get a sense of the movie and summarize it!

The Gateway Mental Health Helpline

After 2 months of being in lockdown due to COVID-19, the Gateway Mental Health Helpline was birthed. With the intent  to provide our community support, and a non-judgmental space to share thoughts, fears, and anxiety a few mental health professionals within our community members came together to provide this free of cost service to students, parents, team members, and families during this difficult time. This team comprises of the members from our Social Emotional Learning team, and Dr. Tanuja Prem, a parent at Gateway and counsellor.

Serving on a Helpline for the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai

Varsha Makhija was a part of a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) organized mental health helpline that was initiated due to the rising number of mental-health concerns in the city after COVID-19.

Coffee or Chai over Zoom with Parents!

While we see our students online for classes every day, we haven’t been seeing parents regularly over the last 3 months. Indira Bodani, Manika Khanna, Radhika Misquitta and Varsha Makhija have planned a coffee or chai zoom call where parents can come online to say hello, share experiences and ask questions. This virtual session is voluntary and open to the Gateway team too!

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world to shut down overnight, it was left for us as educators to adapt, innovate and transform learning as we knew it. With the attempt to share knowledge and experiences from experts in the field, The Gateway School of Mumbai conducted an online 'Panel Discussion on Virtual Learning'  where we gathered as a community to discuss challenges to virtual learning for our students, as well as potential solutions. The selected panelists came from a variety of educational backgrounds, in order to present diverse and rich perspectives.
